Harlan York

The first ever attorney in New Jersey to win “Immigration Lawyer of the Year” from Best Lawyers, Harlan York is former immigration chair of the NJ State Bar Association and former co-chair for the NY State Bar Association CFLS Committee on Immigration.  He currently serves on the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) National Practice Management Committee.

Mr. York has appeared on National Television on CBS This Morning and Primer Impacto on Univision, as well as speaking on a host of immigration issues on Telemundo, NBC, Bloomberg Law and PBS.

In his two decades exclusively practicing immigration law, Mr. York notes among his most memorable cases:

  • Arguing that immigrants with crimes should be allowed to remain in the U.S. upon proving rehabilitation and hardship to their American spouses and children
  • Countless successful appeals before federal and administrative courts on issues regarding waivers of removal and political asylum
  • Preparing applications for companies sponsoring immigrants in industries ranging from restaurants to construction to agriculture, to academic institutions and research labs
  • Representation of high level athletes, artists and entertainers including winners of Emmys, Grammys and Olympic Medals
  • Winning deportation cases for immigrants whose children have special needs
  • Assisting victims of violence who suffered at the hands of both foreign and domestic aggressors

He frequently lectures on Immigration Law, including at Columbia, New York, Seton Hall and Rutgers Law Schools. He is a well-known speaker at events sponsored by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation and Federal Bar Association. Mr. York was also a Judge at the American Mock Trial Tournament at Yale University. His highly rated Lawline.com Lecture Series is available for attorneys, law students and the public to study online.

Mr. York has also provided expert opinions to plaintiffs’ and defendants’ attorneys in civil matters as well as counsel to federal and state criminal defense lawyers, in cases relating to immigration, including the recent “Real Housewives of New Jersey” matter.

His chapter on Immigration Law Enforcement: Collaboration and Authority appears in the 2014 Thomson Reuters/Aspatore book, New Developments in Immigration Enforcement and Compliance: Leading Lawyers on Navigating Trends in Immigration Law (Inside the Minds).

Mr. York moderates annual panels for the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education, on the topics of “Protecting Immigrant Victims of Violence ” and “Immigration and Crime.”

A graduate of Choate Rosemary Hall, the State University of New York at Albany and the Tulane Law School, Mr. York is fluent in Spanish. He is admitted in many jurisdictions including the United States Supreme Court.

Mr. York has coached youth soccer for many years and is a Certified Women’s Self-Defense Instructor.

LAUREN ANSELOWITZ Immigration Attorney

Lauren Anselowitz

Lauren Anselowitz is a partner at the firm. Named to Best Lawyers in America, her most noted accomplishments include successfully arguing multiple cases under the Convention Against Torture before the U.S. Immigration Court. The Executive Office for Immigration Review reported that less than 1% of these cases are granted. Ms. Anselowitz also won oral argument before the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals, one step below the U.S. Supreme Court, to vacate a deportation order for a client of the firm.

In recent years, she has personally represented clients of Harlan York & Associates at Immigration Court and Service Offices in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.

Ms. Anselowitz has successfully resolved complex family and employment-based green card applications, issues of citizenship and a number of different nonimmigrant visa petitions. Her experience includes H, L, E, O and R visas. Additionally, Ms. Anselowitz has worked extensively on applications under the Violence Against Women Act.

Ms. Anselowitz is an adjunct professor of Immigration Law in the Justice Studies Department at Montclair State University. She has lectured at Rutgers University School of Law as well as before the New Jersey State Bar and the Federal Bar Associations. She was honored as a Super Lawyers Rising Star for four years.

A graduate of North Carolina State University and Seton Hall Law School, Ms. Anselowitz earned a Master of Arts Degree from the John C. Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations. She also attended the American University in Cairo, Egypt and served in the field of international criminal law at the Special Court for Sierra Leone. She previously lived in Pretoria, South Africa and has spent time in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Senegal, the Gambia, Ethiopia and Morocco.

Ms. Anselowitz is admitted to the Supreme Court of New Jersey, the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

MAGGIE DUNSMUIR Immigration Attorney

Maggie Dunsmuir

Maggie Dunsmuir is a senior associate with Harlan York & Associates. She represents a diverse group of clients in the areas of permanent residence, naturalization, removal defense, detention, asylum and visas. She appears regularly in hearings before the Immigration Service and United States Immigration Court, and has prevailed on behalf of the firm’s clients before the Board of Immigration Appeals, Federal Courts, and Administrative Appeals Office.

Maggie Dunsmuir has successfully handled a great deal of applications for visas and green cards under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA).  She has also achieved positive outcomes in reopening cases that were previously denied before the firm became involved. She has lectured numerous times on VAWA for the New Jersey State Bar Association.

Ms. Dunsmuir works frequently on H and L visas as well as employment based permanent residence applications.  Additionally, she has successfully obtained various waivers of inadmissibility for clients all over the world.

A graduate of Brooklyn Law School, Ms. Dunsmuir received a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Washington University in St. Louis. She also studied in both Ireland and Guatemala. She is conversant in Spanish.

Ms. Dunsmuir’s immigration law experience included interning at Catholic Charities Immigration Services and the New York Immigration Court, where she researched complex legal issues and drafted decisions for Immigration Judges. She also interned at Advocates for Children of New York, Legal Services and Legal Aid. A member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, she is admitted to practice in New York.

Rikki King Immigration Lawyer

Riki King

Riki King brings a wealth of experience in immigration law to Harlan York & Associates. She previously was an Immigration Staff Attorney at the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Before that, Ms. King interned at Immigration Units at Catholic Charities, Northeast New Jersey Legal Services and The Legal Aid Society.

Riki King handles a great deal of employment and family immigration cases. Additionally she appears often with clients in Immigration Court and at the Immigration Service offices in many states.

She also spent several years as an attorney with a large international law firm in New York, where she handled complex litigation issues. Her accolades include the Legal Aid Society’s 2007 and 2011 pro bono awards.

Ms. King attended New York Law School where she graduated third in her class. She completed her concentration in Immigration and was Executive Notes Editor of the Law Review as well as a John Marshall Harlan Scholar. She also holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Colgate University. Additionally, she studied in both Spain and Wales.

A member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Ms. King is admitted to practice in New York and Massachusetts.

Mary Lynn Seery Immigration Attorney

Mary Lynn Tedesco, Of Counsel

Mary Lynn Tedesco has spent a decade working in immigration law. She has successfully represented clients in removal proceedings, before USCIS, in federal courts, and at US Embassies all over the world.

Ms. Tedesco has won asylum and withholding of removal, protection under the UN Convention Against Torture, permanent residency,
Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, as well as termination of removal proceedings due to improper allegations of fraud and crime. Additionally she has won countless waivers and appeals. She is particularly focused in complex matters of statutory interpretation, and where criminal and immigration law intersect.

Fluent in Spanish, Ms. Tedesco is a graduate of Seton Hall Law School and The Catholic University of America. She is admitted to practice
in New Jersey and North Carolina, as well as before the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.

In addition to being Of Counsel to Harlan York and Associates, Ms. Tedesco operates her own immigration firm in Charlotte, North Carolina.
